Spider-Girl Character Digital Illustration

This project was a personal practice illustration based on Marvel’s Spider-Girl comic. Inspired by the film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” this project pays homage to details used by artists who worked on the film, such as experimental lighting and texture and a reference to my spin on comic style characters.

PROJECT GOAL

The goal of this project was to practice specific coloring and textures from the film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” while also incorporating my style into the piece. Overall, the main challenge was showing expression through the character’s eyes, mainly because they are distinct shapes covered with a mask. Yet, I find that the expression used and the experimentation of color made this piece most successful.

PROJECT EXPERIENCE

I referenced the traditional Anya Corazon designs created for official Marvel comics when creating this piece. I struggled a bit to get the turn and angle right for her stance, but after adjusting my line art over time, I captured the pose I envisioned in my mind. I also wanted to use cool tones when it came to color initally, but warm tones are typically my signature addition to my pieces. Therefore, I used various layers of blending modes to combine mine and the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” color palettes and stylization.

PROJECT OUTCOME

What I admire most about “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” is the fact that it has its main focus on Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino hero in the Marvel universe. There are very few superhero films that have a Black or Brown character as the center point, so this film was inspirational for me and made me hope to work on more huge projects that strive to help marginalized groups feel seen in a positive light. For this reason, I felt joy in creating this piece in my style; it exceeded my expectations in terms of how my style of color and sketching could mix with the film’s and comic’s inspiration.
